Crossroads, noun: 1. A place where two roads cross. 2. A place where bargains can be made. 3. See also “places to avoid.” Antimony Price has never done well without a support system. As the youngest of her generation, she has always been able to depend on her parents, siblings, and cousins to help her out when she’s in a pinch—until now. After fleeing from the Covenant of St. George, she’s found herself in debt to the crossroads and running for her life. No family. No mice. No way out. Lucky for her, she’s always been resourceful, and she’s been gathering allies as she travels: Sam, fūri trapeze artist turned boyfriend; Cylia, jink roller derby captain and designated driver; Fern, sylph friend, confidant, and maker of breakfasts; even Mary, ghost babysitter to the Price family. Annie’s actually starting to feel like they might be able to figure things out—which is probably why things start going wrong again. New Gravesend, Maine is a nice place to raise a family…or make a binding contract with the crossroads. For James Smith, whose best friend disappeared when she tried to do precisely that, it’s also an excellent place to plot revenge. Now the crossroads want him dead and they want Annie to do the dirty deed. She owes them, after all. And that’s before Leonard Cunningham, aka, “the next leader of the Covenant,” shows up… It’s going to take everything Annie has and a little bit more to get out of this one. If she succeeds, she gets to go home. If she fails, she becomes one more cautionary tale about the dangers of bargaining with the crossroads. But no pressure.

An ancient sorcerer. A malevolent plot. Can Caina see the trap before it is too late? The serpent men seek to conquer the world, but Caina wants to banish them first. If she can find a way to destroy the Liminal Temple, she can cut off the serpent men from her world and win a final victory. But in the shadows, an ancient sorcerer of the orcs is stirring, preparing mighty spells that neither Caina nor the serpent men can foresee. And all this sorcerer needs to finish his work is Caina's blood...

Hobson’s Point stands independent and is safe from the machinations of the Sects for now. An unexpected call for aid takes Verdan into the territory of the Kranjir, a land steeped in the mysteries he seeks to unravel and the birthplace of his apprentice, Dirk. Betrayal, foul monsters and ancient secrets might yet spell doom for not just Verdan’s allies but the entirety of the north. When suspicion abounds, the honour of the Clans will be pushed to its breaking point.

With growing suspicion of the Sorcerer Sects, Verdan must give the people of Hobson’s Point the tools to protect themselves. Failure means death and the fall of the final independent city. An age has passed, a blight curses the land, and one hero stands above the rest to restore the balance. Verdan Blacke is an Imperial Wizard, a researcher by preference but soldier by necessity. Surviving an intense battle, Verdan is cursed by a hex witch in her final moments. Without any good options, Verdan escapes the ever increasing pain the curse inflicts by performing a self-made stasis ritual. When the spell fades, and he has awoken, Verdan finds a world completely different from the one he left behind. Dark things work in daylight with impunity, once common knowledge is a mystery, and even the nature of magic that humans use has changed. One wizard, a million problems, and the wrath of profound magic.

Jai lives as a royal hostage in the Sabine Court ever since his father Rohan, leader of the Steppefolk, led a failed rebellion and was executed by the very emperor Jai now serves. When the emperor’s son and heir is betrothed to Princess Erica of the neighboring Dansk Kingdom, she brings with her a dowry: dragons. Endemic to the northern nation, these powerful beasts come in several forms, but mystery surrounds them. Only Dansk royalty know the secret to soulbonding with these dangerous beasts to draw on their power and strength. This marriage and the alliance that forms will change that forever. But conspirators lurk in the shadows, and soon the Sabine Court is in chaos. With his life in danger, Jai uses the opportunity to escape with the Dansk handmaiden, Frida, and a stolen hatchling. Review of book The Lies of Vampires and Slayers / Magic on Main Street 1 (K.M. Shea)

By night, they fight in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. By day, they are friendly next-door neighbors. Neither of them know that their alter egos are archenemies. I’ve spent my life training in the family business of slaying vampires, but I’m tired of all the death. I want to prove we slayers can help society, not just break it. I start my new life by joining the Magiford supernatural task force, which exists to protect humans and supernaturals from harmful magic. There’s just one problem. All of my teammates who work the night shift with me are scared of me since slayers are the assassins of the supernatural world. Worse yet, even though I’m doing my best at pretending to be a human during the day—a necessity as a lone slayer can quickly become a dead slayer I’ve utterly failed to win over any of the humans in my apartment complex since I have the charisma of an overdue investigation report. That changes when a handsome vampire moves in next door. Connor may not be willing to try any of my failed attempts at baking, but he’s charming and not afraid of me. Plus, he’s the first friend I’ve made who has the time to hang out with me after work. Things are looking up, or they would be, except a mysterious and extremely powerful vampire has declared downtown his nightly hunting ground. I’m the only one on my team who can match him in a fight, something he finds endlessly entertaining. That isn’t a good sign for my general life expectancy. My greatest goal might be to win over my squad, but if this vampire doesn’t back off I might not live long enough to achieve it.

***** 6,8/10 Review of book The Emperor's Edge / The Emperor's Edge 1 (Lindsay Buroker)

Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed. Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin, is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

As much as I am intrigued as to where the Alice Worth series is headed, at this time, I’m not interested in continuing on...

This is both a strength, but also a minor critique, in that while I learned a lot, I sometimes found her almost mathematical blow-by-blow explanations of how the magic worked too clinical and almost boring. .

I went ahead and bought the next in the series instantly at the end, and not because of cliffhangers, folks, the story wraps up nicely in the first book, but because the story also introduced all kinds of potential conflicts and other baddies..

Review of book Heart of Malice / Alice Worth1 (Lisa Edmonds)

The first time Moses Murphy’s granddaughter killed on his orders, she was six years old. For twenty years, she was a prisoner of an organized crime syndicate, forced to use her magic to make Moses the most powerful and feared man on the East Coast. To escape his cruelty, she faked her own death and started a new life as Alice Worth. As a private investigator specializing in cases involving the supernatural, Alice walks a precarious line between atoning for the sins of her grandfather’s cabal and keeping her true identity hidden. Hired to investigate the disappearance of a mysterious object of power, Alice enlists the help of Malcolm, a ghost running from a past as nightmarish as her own. It soon becomes clear the missing object was taken by someone with a dangerous secret and an unknown agenda. When her client is kidnapped, Alice must find her and the object of power before a vengeful killer destroys the city and slaughters thousands starting with Alice.

Good pacing, good characters, and strong writing makes this read—even at 400+ pages—a quick one…and leaves the reader eager for more...

If you don't like reading about spells and witchcraft, this series is not for you, because Rachel spends a lot of time "stirring spells" as she calls it...

The writing was fabulous and just utterly perfect and surprisingly better than I expected. I read every book in Kim Harrison..

I first discovered Kim Harrison's Hollows series about seven years ago and I remember devouring the first 6 or so book..

Things that seem trivial now make sense in later books, and characters that seem secondary now are major later on..

There isn’t anything in the way of romance in this book. There’s some teasing between the friends and potential for romance with some sexy characters on the scene..

Although this series is not particularly fast moving, it is so character-driven that I was completely absorbed nonetheless..

I did grab a copy since it was on sale for $2.99 and I also picked up a discounted audiobook.  The narrator did a nice job but I didn’t like anything about this story enough to want to bother with book 2...

It’s a book that does a lot of work setting up its world, but manages to create interesting characters with compelling problems..
